Rick WarrenThe Spiritual Direction of Rick Warren

“As Rick Warren moves ahead toward his global peace agenda, working with virtually anyone or any group who rallies behind him, he has moved to the forefront of evangelical leaders who are propagating the contemplative prayer movement (i.e., spiritual formation). In essence, he has become an evangelist for contemplative spirituality. For those who realize that contemplative (that is mystical meditation) is the driving force behind the kingdom-now, heaven-on-earth emerging church movement, this is an alarming deduction.” From Rick Warren Plays “Catch Me If You Can” While Promoting Mysticism

Saddleback Church Is A Contemplative Church

RICK WARREN ON CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER:

1. Rick Warren encourages the use of Breath Prayers in Purpose Driven Life (pp. 89, 299) and on pastors.com

2. Pastors.com recommends several contemplatives: Brennan Manning, Henri Nouwen, Richard Foster, Thomas Merton, Jan Johnson and many more.

3. Kay Warren Recommends Henri Nouwen’s book, In The Name Of Jesus, and says this about Nouwen’s book, “[I]t hits at the heart of the minister… I highlighted almost every word!”

4. Warren speaks in 2004 At The National Pastor’s Convention (put on by Youth Specialties) where Yoga, Labyrinths and Contemplative Prayer are used and promoted.

5. Rick Warren integrated Youth Specialties and Group Publishing leaders (who are very contemplative) to train at his 2005 Purpose Driven Youth Ministry convention. Youth Conference Speakers

RICK WARREN ON THE EMERGING CHURCH:

New Age sympathizer Leonard Sweet, who trained church leaders and pastors at the 2008 Saddleback Small Groups Conference, is accepted by Rick Warren as a trustworthy source of Christian leadership. However, Sweet’s view of the value of small groups lines up more with the New Age and Alice Bailey than it does with biblical Christianity. In his book, Quantum Spirituality, Sweet states:

“The power of small groups is in their ability to develop the discipline to get people “in-phase” with the Christ consciousness and connected with one another.”

“Rick Warren and others say we need to pay attention to the emerging church. Things are changing, they say and the “emerging church” has the answers for our generation. But what will the emerging church emerge into? Could it be a form of Christianity that embraces experience rather than God’s Word?” –Roger Oakland, Understand the Times.

RICK WARREN ON POOR BIBLE TRANSLATIONS:

Rick Warren uses the paraphrase, The Message, for much of his writings. We bring this to your attention because we believe too many people are using The Message as a literal translation, which it is not.

RICK WARREN ON THEOLOGY:

“Warren teaches that God ‘created the church to meet your five deepest needs’ just as the Roman Catholic Church says, ‘The Church is the mother of all believers.’ Warren, like Rome, has switched from obedience to the Word and Person of the Living God to submission to a church to achieve one’s needs. It is the oldest and cleverest temptation known to man.”

–Richard Bennett, The Adulation Of Man In The Purpose-Driven Life

“The Purpose Driven Life maintains and promotes a poor theology stemming from an inadequate bibliology. Verses are used out of context…” –Tim Todd

Rick Warren, Muslims & Christians

By Elliott Nesch Holy Bible Prophecy Recently, an article from the Orange County Register was published entitled “Rick Warren builds bridge to Muslims.” I reported on the article via our blog. Since then, Warren has responded to many of the allegations in the article and a representative from his church, Johnny Montgomery, has also contacted me. For the sake of truth and fairness, so as not to be lumped into the category of irresponsible bloggers, I wish to publish Warren’s response as well as list my remaining concerns. The original article...

UPDATE!-Rick Warren Builds Bridge to Muslims

Since publishing our initial post, Rick Warren Builds Bridge to Muslims, which was reported by Jim Hinch of the Orange County Register on February 23, 2012, Rick Warren has been the focus of a King’s Way initiative which states that Christians and Muslims believe in the same God. After many in the blogosphere have come out against this, Rick Warren has recently come out with a statement debunking the report. But what about this King’s Way document for which all of this controversy has been derived? And from which Jim Hinch came to...

When Apostasy Runs Amok

By Jan Markell Olive Tree Ministries In the early days of all things “purpose driven,” I didn’t say much. I was, admittedly, skeptical. I had a hunch churches might experience the promised growth thanks to the movement behind “purpose driven,” the seeker-sensitive movement; however, it might not be a healthy growth. But as the years moved on, I started hearing about wreckage. Calls and e-mails told me that beloved congregations were caving to all things unsound and even unscriptural. Members were told that the...

Rick Warren Builds Bridge to Muslims

AN UPDATE HAS BEEN RELEASED ON THIS STORY! CLICK HERE… GFM Note: We have learned that Rick Warren has left a comment at the bottom of the Orange County Register article we are sharing below. “I deeply love my Muslim neighbors but this article contains multiple errors – factually and theologically that neither our dear friends in the Muslim Community nor the Christians at Saddleback Church would agree with.” However, his comment did not say what specific “errors” the article contained. It is very common for Warren to claim that others...

Rick Warren’s Ecumenical Idolatry!

by Joe Schimmel Did Rick Warren Pray to Allah in the Name of a Muslim Prophet? Rick Warren—who is one of President Barack Obama’s bridges to the evangelical church—managed to pray an inaugural prayer that made nearly everyone happy, with the exception, that is, of the one true God to whom the prayer was supposed to be addressed. While Warren began by quoting the Hebrew Schema, and addressing the biblical God of all creation, who warned, “You shall have no other gods before Me….for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God…” (Exodus 20:3, 5b),...
